Hello all!!! Welcome back to another interesting post. In this post we are gonna see why leap year exists?
Tropical Year
The Earth takes 365.2419 days to make a round around the Sun. This is called Tropical year. According to this data in our calendar we need to have 365.2419 days in a year. But we are having 365 days in a year in the calendar. This is the reason behind the leap year existence.
Julian Calendar
In Julian calendar, year which is divisible by 4 will be having a day added to it. Then that year is called leap year. So if you take average of number of days in four consecutive years then one year will be stretched over 365.25. This is 0.00781 days longer than 365.2419 days.
Average number of days in a year = (366 + (365*3))/4 = 365.25.
Gregorian Calendar
The difference of 0.00781 days was noticed by Pope Gregory Xlll. So he introduced the Gregorian Calendar in which year which are divisible by 100 should also be divisible by 400 then only that year will be a leap year. This has brought down the difference to 0.00031 day per year. This was introduced in October 15, 1582.
This is the Historical and Geographical reason behind the existence of leap year. Thanks for reading. If you like this post share with your friends and Subscribe to the blog. Have a nice day.
