Hello all!!! We all like to play with the ocean waves. Ha e you ever wondered how waves are formed in sea?
The Sun and the Moon have the effect on formation of waves in sea. First we can have a look at the effect of moon.
Moon has gravitational force like Earth. But the gravitational force of moon is very much less than the Earth.
Moon's gravitational pull lift the ocean water. Earth's gravitational pull and Moon's gravitational pull will give a resultant force in ocean water. The north pole will have force towards south and the south pole will have force towards north. Thus it will be like squeezing towards the centre. This will result in the formation of the waves just like squeezing a pimple.
Now you will have a doubt that why waves are not formed in lakes and swimming pools? The reason os simple. Area of water in pools and lakes are very less. So there won't be much traction for squeezing the water.
The Sun is large but it is located at longer distance. So, it won't have much effect on the formation of waves. When moon and sun are in line with the Earth then the height of waves formed will be larger. When sun and moon are at right angle to the Earth the height of waves will be small. The height of waves also depends on the geographical structure of the continents.
