How does Electric Vehicle works??? Big Tech Bang Explains

Hello all... welcome back to another interesting concept, how Electric Vehicles work? As I have told in my past post that this decade is gonna be the decade of Electric Vehicles. It will be more interesting to learn how EV works.

The major change you will see in electric vehicles is the fuel and engine. Let's have a look at basic components of Electric cars.
  • Energy storage unit
  • Controller
  • Propulsion system

Energy Storage Unit

The source of fuel used in electric cars are electricity. In petrol powered cars we have petrol tank to store petrol. But in electric cars we can't store electricity in tank. So we need energy storage system that is battery.

The major mass of electric vehicle is it's battery. Since, we need more energy to power a car, more energy needs to be stored. In Tesla Model S, the base of the car is totally filled with batteries.

The battery can be chemical battery. Research are going on Fuel Cells to reduce cost and increase efficiency of the system. Battery can be charged in residence, this provides more flexibility. There is no need to go to fuel station. Wireless charging technology has also being introduced in electric cars.

But the drawback is that electric vehicles cannot travel more distance with single charge. This is the only reason which is holding back customers not to buy electric vehicles. If there are sufficient number of charging stations then its good to go with electric vehicles.

Controller

Controller controls the speed of the car according to the driver's behaviour on the acceleration pedal. As we all know that where ever controller comes it will be the brain of the system.

It also converts dc to ac, so that the motor can be operated. It will have the Micro Controller kind of thing. This will provide better control of acceleration.

Propulsion System

The propulsion system used here is the electric motor. Electric motor will convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. The shaft of the motor will be connected to the wheel shaft. So, the rotational movement is given to the wheels.

The electric motors used in electric vehicles are of ac motors. This is because of the need of  high initial torque.

Advantages of Electric cars
  1. Reduces pollution.
  2. There is no tail-smoke coming out from the vehicle.
  3. Since less number of components used, it will be more efficient.
  4. Less maintenance is required.
  5. No tension about oil change.
  6. Easy to charge.
Disadvantages of  Electric cars
  1. Less mileage.
  2. Currently more number of charging stations are not available.
  3. Less pick up torque.
